Material

Happy Friday, angels.  Taking a break from posting my old zines, this is my end of week wrap up.  I have been doing this for years now and I know you always look forward to it.  Just kidding!  This is the first time I've ever done it, and I think I’m my only reader.  Anyway, here is my review of my week: Reading Material:    I discovered a site called bookos.org , a free electronic library, and I have been working my way through Raymond Chandler's works since last week.  I love it when novels mention Los Angeles, and I have been planning to like Raymond Chandler for years, but when I read The Big Sleep last week, I was disappointed because the writing was a little dopier than I'd imagined, though I knew that in film noir spoofs (shout out to Neil Simon's "The Cheap Detective," a 1978 spoof starring Peter Falk as a type of Philip Marlowe character) a typical line is something dopey, like "She had legs that wouldn't quit even if you wa...

Old Toys & Nostalgia

Did you guys have these toys?  I want to find them for my son.  It's sort of an obsession but I don't want to buy them on ebay, I want them to be from a thriftstore I went to 2 thriftstores this week without any sort of toy section.  I think it may be more like little church thriftstores that have a lot of toys and that's not the kind I went to.  I LOVE these toys.  At the same time, when I go to thriftstores lately I have a bad habit of buying stupid shit I could never ever want or need.  Case in point -- a guy's mullet wig.  "haha that's funny, who wouldn't want one of those?" you may ask.  ME.  If any of you sweet local friends who are obsessed w/ my cute son are good at thrift store shopping, hint hint.

milk

in the story of my life i would be a girl a pill-saddened milk-laden mouth-breathing girl in the story of my life i'd want to be a lamb a milk-giving soft-breathing daisy-laden lamb in the story of my life i am a blob a pill-breathing life-sleeping half-pretty slob.

"The Big Break: A Manuscript" zine, first published February 1999

It may not seem like this, since the theme of this zine was ostensibly the urge for recognition, but I remember the inspiration for this writing coming from the walks I took, often at night and/or in the rain, through the beautiful, empty streets of Olympia.  Being a big city girl, I was just so .... touched and, like, wantful of the pasts that made up the lives I saw on display in the houses I passed, I loved the look of the sheer green curtains of some stranger's kitchen window, the children's toys getting wet in the front yard .... I just loved to walk these neighborhoods.  So even though that might not show up in this zine, it was the thought/feeling at the back of my head as I wrote it. xoxo robin
